Barry Butler TrophyHistory of the TrophySquadron Leader BJ McG Butler RAFR (Retired) presented the Barrie Butler Trophy to Herts & Bucks Wing ATC at the time of his retirement as the Wing's Administration Officer. It is awarded to a cadet who performs a completely selfless act during the year. Award Winner 2001
Erica has been awarded the
Barrie Butler Trophy following her almost single-handed running of 1066
(Hitchin) Squadron ATC during a period of severe Staff shortage.
Erica's efforts are even more commendable because she had to make a 52
mile round trip to the Squadron at least twice a week from her Nursing studies
in Cambridge. As well as acting as
the Squadron's Training Officer (where she was responsible for organising and
developing a training programme for 30 cadets) she also started operating the
Duke of Edinburgh's Award on the Squadron.
Within less than a year nine Hitchin cadets now have their Bronze awards
and Erica has gained her Gold award and received the insignia at St James's
Palace in May. The Squadron's new Commanding
Officer, Flight Lieutenant Steve Callaghan said "…If it were not for the
self-sacrifices made by CWO Vey during the past year, 1066 Sqn would not be in
the strong position it is in today, and many cadets would not have had the
opportunities to succeed which they have had…" |
