Barry Butler Trophy

History of the Trophy

Squadron Leader BJ McG Butler RAFR (Retired) presented the Barrie Butler Trophy to Herts & Bucks Wing ATC at the time of his retirement as the Wing's Administration Officer.  It is awarded to a cadet who performs a completely selfless act during the year.

Award Winner 2001

CWO Erica Vey of 1066 (Hitchin) Squadron has been awarded the Barry Butler Memorial Award for 2001 for her efforts at her Squadron over the last year.

The award presented at the CO's conference on the 9th April 2002 by Wing Commander Stockill.

20-year-old Cadet Warrant Officer (CWO) Erica Vey has won one of the most prestigious prizes within Herts & Bucks Wing.

Erica has been awarded the Barrie Butler Trophy following her almost single-handed running of 1066 (Hitchin) Squadron ATC during a period of severe Staff shortage.  Erica's efforts are even more commendable because she had to make a 52 mile round trip to the Squadron at least twice a week from her Nursing studies in Cambridge.  As well as acting as the Squadron's Training Officer (where she was responsible for organising and developing a training programme for 30 cadets) she also started operating the Duke of Edinburgh's Award on the Squadron.  Within less than a year nine Hitchin cadets now have their Bronze awards and Erica has gained her Gold award and received the insignia at St James's Palace in May.

The Squadron's new Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Steve Callaghan said "…If it were not for the self-sacrifices made by CWO Vey during the past year, 1066 Sqn would not be in the strong position it is in today, and many cadets would not have had the opportunities to succeed which they have had…".
