Duke of Edinburgh's Award - Award Leadership

This is a good choice for a Sqn who have a lot of experience & success in obtaining Awards. It is for a senior cadet who will take on a lot of the responsibility for running of the Award on the Squadron.

Ideas/Aims

Participants should be discuss Award Leadership with the Wing Duke of Edinburgh Award Officer.

Topics to be covered should include:

The aim and principles of the Award.
Framework and conditions of the Award.
Details of each Section.
The support structure of the Award.
Management and organisation within a group and the concept of teamwork.
Operational and promotional literature and videos.
An introduction to the skills of working with young people in a group, including listening and counselling skills and instructing.
Use the Award Programme to meet the individual needs of young people.
Also to be encouraged to:
Acquire specific skills which you can use within your Group e.g. mountain walking or physical recreation qualifications.
Visit an Award Group within another Operating Authority in order to broaden your experience.
You should be involved in a leadership capacity within your Award Group, under the supervision of an experienced Leader.

Possible roles include:

Arranging and supervising a course in a specific Section of the award.
Instructing in a specific activity, e.g. campcraft, navigation or Physical Achievement Tests.
Offering leadership to and co-ordinating the activities of a Bronze Group.
Acting as an assessor for a particular activity, e.g. a skill or physical activity at which you are proficient.
With the support of Squadron Staff, undertake a specific project to demonstrate organisational and leadership skills.

For example:

Organise an Expedition training programme leading to assessment for a Bronze Group.
Give an introductory talk to a group of potential participants and guide them in their choice of activity.
Draw up a training programme for a participant or group of participants in one of the Sections of the Award.
Arrange a social event or fundraising event for your Group.

Review/Assessment

All participants should work with the support and supervision of an appropriately qualified and experienced Leader approved by Wing. Participants should keep notes, along with a diary, showing dates and details of practical service together with a report on their leadership development exercise.

This should be discussed with the assessor. The assessment should be ongoing and probably be undertaken by the Award Officer for the Wing.

Activities under this section also count under the Millennium Volunteer Award Scheme.
