Air Training Corps Terms

Just to help you get to grips with all the jargon, here are a few important terms you'll come across.

ACP - Air Cadet Publication 

AEF - Air Experience Flight 

AEG - Air Experience Gliding 

ATC - Air Training Corps, Air Traffic Control 

AWO - Adult Warrant Officer 

AWOL - Absent Without Leave 

C - Celsius (temperature) or compass. 

Cdt - Cadet 

CI - Civilian Instructor 

CO - Commanding Officer 

Cpl - Corporal 

CWO - Cadet Warrant Officer 

DF - Detached Flight 

Eqpt - Equipment 

Fg Off - Flying Officer 

Flt - Flight 

Flt Cdr - Flight Commander 

Flt Lt - Flight Lieutenant 

FS - Flight Sergeant 

GIC - gliding induction course 

gnd - ground 

Hdg - heading. The direction in which an aircraft's nose points in flight in the horizontal plane, expressed in compass degrees. 

GS - gliding scholarship 

HQ - Headquarters 

I/C - In Command 

knot (kt) - one nautical mile per hour (never one knot per hour), the standard unit of aviation speed measurement. One knot equals 1.1515 mph; one nautical mile equals 6,080 feet. 

lat - latitude. 

lon(g) - longitude 

NCO - Non Commissioned Officer 

OC - Officer Commanding 

OC Sqn - Officer Commanding Squadron 

Plt Off - Pilot Officer 

Sgt - Sergeant 

Sqn - Squadron 

Trg Off - Training Officer 

UHF - ultra-high frequency. 

VHF - very high frequency. 

Wg Cdr - Wing Commander 

WHQ - Wing Headquarters 

WO - Warrant Officer
