Wing Awards - Presentation Ceremony

On Sunday 16th May 04 the awards presentation took place in Halton House Officers Mess in the South (Gentleman's) Drawing Room.

The awards were presented by Group Captain K Havelock AFC RAF, DACOS A5/Contingency plans from HQ Strike Command, RAF High Wycombe.

The awards presented :-

Vampire & Kelsey Trophies 

Annually the Wing holds a competition to find the best Squadron in Hertfordshire & Buckinghamshire Wing. The winning Squadron is presented with the Vampire Trophy. The Kelsey Trophy is awarded to the best Academic Squadron in the Wing.

Flying Scholarships

Cadets attend a flying club or an Air Experience Flight and learn to fly or navigate a light aircraft. They study and take some of the private pilot exams. The Flying Scholarship cadets learn to fly to solo standard. Cadets on the navigation scholarship plan a route then fly the route to test their skills.

Gliding Scholarship

Cadets attend a Volunteer Gliding School, where they are taught to fly the Vigilant, a powered glider. The course gives the cadets 8 hours of flying training to solo standard. On completion of the course the cadets are presented with Blue Wings. Some cadets also get the opportunity to fly a solo circuit and are presented with Silver Wings.

Advanced Gliding Training

On completion of the Gliding Scholarship, some cadets are selected to complete advanced training. This comprises of an additional 5 hours and 5 solo circuits.

Millennium Volunteers Award

 

Millennium Volunteers (MV) acknowledges the hard work and commitment of young people in the voluntary sector by providing Nationally recognised accreditation. It awards an MV certificate for 100 hours of volunteering and an MV award of excellence for 200 hours.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award

The scheme consists of four Sections with three progressive levels:

• Bronze (for those aged 14 and over)

• Silver (for those aged 15 and over) and

• Gold (for those aged 16 and over).

The Sections involve:

• Service - Helping other people in the local community

• Expeditions - Training for, planning and completing a journey on foot.

• Skills - Covering almost any hobby, skill or interest

• Physical Recreation – Sport and fitness

• Residential Project (Gold Award only) - A purposeful enterprise with people not previously known to the Participant

The Gold Award Certificates are awarded at a Buckingham Palace Garden Party, where the recipients meet members of the Royal Family and celebrities.
