Success in 2005

Cadets from Herts & Bucks Wing have seen their Hockey performance greatly improve after training with the England Squad.

32 members of the Wing’s hockey squads travelled to Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre near Marlow to link up with the England Men’s Squad in preparation for the coming season.

The squad spent the morning session watching from the sidelines as the England Team, lead by head coach Jason Lee, took to the pitch for a two-hour skills session. The Cadets were able to see the game being played at the highest level allowing the Wing’s coaching staff to pick up many new ideas to take back to their own training sessions.

After taking lunch in the Old Abbey, the Cadets held their own training session on the international-standard pitch. During this session, the Cadets were coached by some of the England players including current team captain Brett Garrard and goalkeeper Jimi Lewis.

After two hours working with the coaching staff the improvement was clear to see, and the day continued with a display of pure accuracy and skill by the England Team as they fine tuned their “short corner” technique, before breaking into a practice match for the last hour of the day. The Cadets then joined the England Team for a photo shoot and autograph session.

A combination of the cadets’ (and Staff’s) hard work and this unique training opportunity were shown recently at RAF Cranwell when Herts & Bucks Wing’s cadets came second in the Central and East Region championship.  Very much improving on their 6th place in 2004!

The day was organised by Herts & Bucks’ PEdO, Flt Lt Aaron West RAFVR(T), said that the PEd Staff at RAF Halton were also to be thanked for their unstinting support of the cadets sporting programme.”
