Wing Commander David Henson

Wing Commander David Henson took over command of Herts & Bucks Wing on 1st December 2003. 

Wg Cdr David Henson started as a cadet with 2203 (Hatfield & DeHaviland) Sqn and was also a staff cadet with 616 VGS. As a Civilian Instructor he served with 1187 (Hemel Hempstead) Sqn, 1166 (Welwyn Garden City) Sqn and 1280 (Rickmansworth) Sqn where he was commissioned in 1989.

Within two months of being commissioned he was promoted and appointed as the Commanding Officer of 1372 (Elstree) Sqn. Having served for five years, he transferred to 1113 (Berkhamsted) Sqn as a Sqn Officer, but within a few months took over as the commanding officer.

A year later he was appointed as the Wing Physical Education Officer, leading the Wing to fifth place in the Corps. During this time he organised the ATC element of the VJ Day 50th Anniversary Parade in London, with more than 100 cadets marching down The Mall with HRH The Queen taking the salute.

In 1995 he was promoted to Sqn Ldr and took on responsibility for Sqn's in West Herts and North Bucks. Additional responsibilities included the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and the selection of Cadets for the Douglas Haynes Trophy, Alan Payne Shield, Dacre Sword and Broach as well as the Buckinghamshire Lord Lieutenant's Cadet. 

In 2002 he become deputy to the Officer Commanding Herts & Bucks Wing.

In 1992 he joined 613 VGS at RAF Halton as a supernumerary instructor. In 1993 he took on responsibility as the Training Admin Officer for 613 VGS in addition to his Wing Staff Duties. These duties involved organising residential courses, weekend gliding allocations and liaison with Wing Gliding Liaison Officers to provide the Gliding Scholarship students. He is qualified as an A2* instructor and has sent many cadets on their 1st solo. 

He is a Senior Police Officer with the Metropolitan Police based at Heathrow, in command of the operational support teams. Married to Pam, a keen supporter of Air Cadets and a former Civilian Instructor. He has two grown up children, the eldest having achieved her Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award and youngest who was a Cadet.
